Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Philipps-University, Marburg (Germany) from 1980-2006; since Oct 1, 2006, Professor emeritus.
Born on April 25, 1938, in Czernowitz/Romania. Studies in medicine, psychology, and philosophy at the universities of Erlangen/Germany, Vienna/Austria, and Tübingen/Germany. Habilitation in medical psychology (venia legendi) in 1971.
Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Neurology at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1975 to 1980.
Hermann-Simon-Award for outstanding research in social psychiatry in 1990.
Christina-Barz-Award for scientific research in the field of eating disorders in 1994.
Ernst-von-Bergmann-Medal of the German General Medical Council in 1996. Lilly Quality of life-Award in 2006.
Member of numerous learned societies, member of the German Academy of Nature Research (Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher) "Leopoldina" (since 1991). Niilo-Hallman-Medal of the Finnish Foundation for Pediatric Research in Helsinki (December 1998). Max-Planck-Award for International Cooperation (December 1999). Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (since February 2000). Honorary President of the German Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (April 2000). Honorary Member of the Romanian Association for Child Neurology and Child Psychiatry (since 2003). Federal Cross of Merit (January 2004). Member of the Steering Committee and Scientific Director of the WPA Global Presidential Program on Child and Adolescent Mental Health, carried out in co-operation with IACAPAP and WHO (2003-2005).

Main research interests: forensic child and adolescent psychiatry, developmental psychopathology, eating disorders, schizophrenia research, psychiatric genetics, therapy and evaluation research.

Publications: More than 600 articles in scientific journals and book chapters in several languages. Author, co-author and editor of more than 50 books in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health. Editor and co-editor of several scientific journals including European Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Zeitschrift für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Nervenarzt, Monatsschrift für Kriminologie und Strafrechtsreform und Deutsches Ärzteblatt, Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, Current Opinion in Psychiatry, Cambridge Monographs in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Editor of the series (in German) “Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry” (currently 70 volumes)
